LIQUID

Fluidity, Reflection & Movement

ARTIST STATEMENT

Dominique Daru is a French painter, living in the South West of France by the ocean. She celebrates the unbreakable union of humans and water. Her painting evokes freshness, pleasure, and joy. A reminder of immersion experiences, light becomes matter, the body is absolved of gravity.

In the process of light filtering through water, diffraction occurs, adorning bodies with strange patterns, a true natural kaleidoscope. The imagination is limitless... the body becomes the medium of a new material, as precious as it is ephemeral.

In the LIQUID series, Dominique Daru investigates the changing forms of water — its textures, reflections, transparency, flow, and interplay with light.

Through subtle shifts in color, brushwork, and composition, each piece reveals both motion and calm, the seen and the seen‑through.

Without defined faces, the figures remain open and anonymous— present, yet unobtrusive—inviting connection without intrusion. Each painting rather offers a personal projection into the character.

A striking addition to any space, this work resonates with depth, and subtle nuance.

It evokes a relatable atmosphere, images of beauty in motion and tranquility, where vibrant colors harmonize effortlessly with the poolside and seaside settings so intrinsic to the UAE lifestyle.

The compositions achieves a luxurious balance of elements, particularly in spaces where stones, sand and greenery prevail. The artist’s expressive brushstrokes introduce a refined imperfection, offering a sense of realism infused with authenticity that draws the viewer in.

The pieces bring poetic and understated presence, offering a human connection while allowing the space to breathe. It adds soul with quiet confidence, never imposing, but always felt.

Dominique Daru is a French artist trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse and began her career as a graphic designer and illustrator before committing fully to painting in 1995. Based in Biarritz, France, she explores themes rooted in local culture and landscape through a figurative realist style. While the human figure remains central to her practice, her proximity to the ocean has inspired a more universal exploration of the elemental relationship between water and humanity.

Her work has been widely exhibited and recognized. In 1990, she received First Prize in Artistic Drawing at the 41st National Salon of Painting and Sculpture of the French Armed Forces in Paris. Between 1998 and 2003, she regularly exhibited at the Grand Marché d’Art Contemporain in Paris, showcasing acrylic and gold leaf works. Notable solo shows include Woman and Her Sensuality at Galerie Christiane Peugeot (2001), and exhibitions at Galerie de l’Infante (2006–2007), as well as private and group shows in Paris, Biarritz, and Saint-Jean-de-Luz in France.
